2008...unchartered territory..

So France aye... lots of things happen every day that i could write about to keep you entertained. My last entry was written ages ago and since then it've in been in France three weeks i think? Anyways its quite frustrating typing on keyboards here cos many of the keys are switched around and i keep making mistakes. I think i took me two weeks to figure out where the apostophe key is.. très merde indeed.

Anyways, i think this year is goin to such an awesome year. I still cant believe i'm in France. Its a very strange feeling, because ive been waiting for this practically since i started studying french in yr 10 and now its finally come. Despite all the stuff that would normally piss me off in Australia, here in France ive determined that its normal and rather quaint. This is probably a good thing cos otherwise i'd walk around all day being annoyed at things- such as the long long lines caused by people who are meant to be serving youbtu are instead having a particularly nice long cozy chat on the phone, or the fact that noone keeps you informed of anything at all. I'm suppose to start uni on londay but all ive been told is just that. Not where to go, what your timetable is, what you'll need, nope, nada. its a french thing i'm sure hahhaha

Anyways Caen is lovely, im starting to love it more and more each day. I went to Rennes for 5 days last week to visit the aussie group there and it was heaps fun. But returning home was so nice and relaxing. Rennes is much larger than Caen but  i think the peacefulness of Caen is better to live in. Anyways i had my first 'ideal french experience' on monday. I woke up to a great sunny day and decided that i'd have a nice slow day of just doin nothing. So i decided to go into town to buy some lunch at our favourite bakery, they do like a deal for 3.4euros wheree you get a baguette; a drink and a dessert. I ended up shopping for a bit ( a habit i cant seem to break despite the expensiveness of it all) and then walked to the Eglise Saint Pierre (church) and welked for a while inside and looked around. It was really beautiful, i'm not even catholic but i think i"d like to go to mass one time there and see what its like.

Anyways afterwards i went into Ducal Castle built by William (Guilliaume) the Conquerer in the 1400s and walked around it; i finally settled near a little playground and sat there eating mu delish lunch. i was just a heaps nice way to enjoy my morning. I also sat there for a while reading my book.

The book is called The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Its an awesome read!! i borrowed it from my American friend John and im now reading it a second time. Its a coming of age kind of book but its written beautifully. Its fiction but it felt really honest and real. So yeh that adds to my desire to read lots of interesting books this year (if i can get them in english that is). Mind you, while in Rennes i bought some books at a market, one is Udolpho ( i think i spelt it right) and the other is called Le Point de Vue by Henry James. I think the latter is an english book translated to French but still my goal is to read it all and understand it all...hopefully hehehe

Anyways i think i've typed up a storm. Im sure i'll be back with another random entry soon.

Until then, a bientot!

Caen -  16/01/08

First week in Caen(pronounced Khon) France, officially over. So much to talk about so little time. Its been a full on first week filled with admin and settling in. So far i’m absolutely loving it here, its just beautiful and different to home. Strangely enough it doesn’t feel like i’m out of Australia. Its like of like being in Little Italy but rather Little France. Attempting to speak French is so much fun and even better when they understand what you’re trying to say. Caen is everything I imagined and even more. Looking forward to a year here. It feels like home already. Here are a few highlights of my week so far-

Landing at the airport to the news that our luggage may have been left in Hong Kong. Luckily it wasn’t mine but Tim, one of the other guys. He didn’t get it back till the next day and even then he had to go back to get it. The beginning of our experience with the frustrating French administration.

Speedy Trains! They are awesome! They’re so fast that you don’t even notice how long the trip actually is. Took us two hours from Paris to Caen, but it felt alot faster. The trains also leave on exact times so even if i was halfway hanging out of the train, they’d leave. That sort of happened to me, the train driver man started yelling at me to hurry up...

BOULANGERIE!! Bakeries are everywhere here! Rightly so, because the bread taste so goddamn good! Every corner has a bakery, and i cant walk past a bakery without buying something...hahah so you do the maths..

In Caen they use the trams alot, gets you to almost anywhere in the city town, we got TWISTO cards which is unlimited travel. The best way to get around anywhere, they should really adopt this in Sydney. They come like every 7mins.

Caen is a university town, so as soon as Friday rolls around, through to Monday, its a ghost town. There are hardly any students around as they all head home for the weekend. So the party nite here is Thursday.

Everything is closed on Sundays! EVERYTHING so....we gotta entertain ourselves. And on most days, shops don’t open till 11am...the French really don’t like to work at all. They have a lunch break for an hour or two in the middle as well. So its more like a day of not working with breaks for work. Its really frustrating because u wait for them to be open, and when u get there, there’s a huge line and u have to wait as they take their time serving, and by the time they get to you its probably their lunch break.....

French men are hot...enough said

Shopping is freakin awesome! Everything is on sale right now, sucks when you’re on a student budget. Didn’t stop me though!

Sunday markets: it’s like a big market, mostly selling food. Found some Vietnamese stalls so that was a nice. They sold fresh spring rolls!! Its all very exciting. They also have these massive mobile caravans that are for roasting chicken, so there’s like a bagillion chickens being roasted on Sundays. Paella is also heaps popular here, they cook and sell it in these massive pot/pan things the size of a dining table. It’s so cool, and smells great too.

Thats all i can think of right now, i’m sure there’s heaps more, but i think France is small doses is what most people can only take in. So until next time, au revoir!

an Ex-tremely awkward encounter....

I guess its always in some way awkward to run into an ex, depending whether it was a bad break up or not. well i was fortunate enough to experience such an encounter a few days ago when I had a blast from the past. We didnt even go out for that long, but it did end badly. More or less, i was a bitch and ended it in a not so nice way (kinda ignored him)...and i take full responsibility for my retardedness, and i appoligise for that..but him...well i'd rather not get into a blood bath, but really..he wasnt worth it (trust me! if only you knew..)
So i ran into him at this event thing, and well he said hi first, cos i didnt see him, and when i saw him, i froze...but i think i covered it pretty well with my overtly sweet verbal diaarheaa (damn the spelling). The usual pleasantries were exchanged- 'hi how are you? what have u been doin? hows work?'.. anyways i left soon after. But overall i think i did pretty good. i managed to avoid the nasty questions ' why did u stop talkin to me, was i bad in bed, why did u even go out with me? ....'  THANK BLESSED GOD, cos he really didnt wanna know the answer.  I"m goin to blame my momentary lapse of intelligence and common sense on the fact that i just wanted to have fun and that i was young and immature (yes the trusty young and immature line). Anyways he was with his current girlfriend, and as self loving and silly as it seems, i had to admit, i'm way hotter (one to viv) . and he's even more metro than he used to be..hahahah. i'm such a bitch but i also had nicer shoes... hahhahaha. its amazing wat things u think about wen ur in this situation- who's better off, who looks good, who's got sumone new. I guess its also karma, i know i deserved it but hey..if i can laugh at it then its all good. I guess it went pretty well on the 'running into ex' scale, it could have been worse, like at mardi gras. I"m sure people have had worse.

This also made me think, of wen i've been in the position where i've been wronged. As psychotic as it seem, i've had revenge dreams. ADMIT IT! YOU HAVE THEM TOO! Like wen someones  treated u like crap and u think 'oh next time wen i run into them i wanna be SOOOPER HOT, with a FREAKIN hot ass boyfriend who looks like he could beat the EX up in one HADUUGETTT'. I hope i dont stereotype vietnamese girls by saying this, but i've also wanted to beat a guys car up with a bat before and egg the house. but i didnt have the nerve, didnt want to make his parents upset cos they'd have to clean the house and plus..he really loved his car.....
I guess my revenge fantasies are rather mild compared to some, its not that i'm not creative, i just havnt got it in me.i once knew a friend who got chased down his road by an ex with a bat and she hit him and his car ....he has managed to live to tell the story, but is now gay. haha i jest. but he he is scarred for life hahahhaah. I rekon having these thoughts alone are pretty good, it soothes the achy breaky heart

Anyways I'm trying to start writing again, ideally being more honest. its so hard wen u don't want to offend people and have them find it. I'm all for offending the general population, its just to specific people that i don't want to offend.

My dad is getting fairly sick, lots of problems, but i think he also has OCD, and its making it worse for him. i wonder if theres something to reduce it. i think he also stresses to much which makes it worse. Its his birthday on the 14th, also french national day thing. Don't know wat to get him, he never wants anything and he doesnt have a hobby or anything. Maybe 'No 1 Dad' Shirt...i think even he would find it entertaining.

I've yet to see transformer, i may be the last person to see it. everyone seen it already. i really want to see it though. looks really good. everyone seems to really like it.  Can anyone who didnt like it let me know, so i can balance out my preconception before i go see it??

This is vivian reporting live from the land of Pho! LOL i'mcurrently on holiday in vietnam with me sister, an dits been a few days, so i'd thort i'd blog so i dotn remember all the funny thigns that happen.

Anyways i'm goin to put it in dot points so its easier to read lol,

YOUR GUIDE TO VIETNAM

1) When in a club(otherwise known as a discotheque) its is very common, actually expected, that boys will dance with other boys, gay or otherwise....

2) even though u may dress liek ahobo and rub dirt on you rface, they will still know ur a foreigner, so you WILL get chopped! and by that i mean they will charge u 5times the price fior anything you want. So the secret really is to say u dont like it, and cut the price and BARGAIN LIKE A CRAZY MOFO..its more fun that way anways

3) food coems in small portions! everythign is reduced, hence everyone here is tiny. So order lots and eat lots

4) This relates to 3, EVERYONE here is tiny, an dby tiny i mean, my size or smaller, and tahts just the men LOL joking, but for real ya'll everyone's small, i feel like so cool rite now. :P

5) everyon sits around all day, for many reasons. One its too FREAKIN HOT!! two, cos they have nothing to do and three, cos us viets are cool like that. :D Time passes so slowly here cos thers so much sun light, i feel lik ei've been sittin outside my grandmas house for years..lol

6) Mosquitos will get to know u very closely, they like foreing meat, its fatter i believe.

7) All the girls here want to be white, like michael jackson. Unliek the west where the tan is a full time accessory , here the whiter u are the more revered u are. Hence here i'm scum! LOL hahah nah all th egirls walk around in the BOILING HEAT with jackets and pants and scarves and face masks and hats and gloves and a tent. its like terrorism.

8) ppl here drive liek maniacs!!! THERE ARE NO ROOOOLSSSS! everythign goes! haha i've already gotten intoa moterbike accident and near my house, sumone got into an accident! Its quite freaky.

Thats all i can think of rite now, but i'll update this guide later on. HOwever sum highlight of the trip have been,

* goin to a carnival and seeing trannies read lotto/bingo

*goin to anothe rcarnival and winning a bag of MSG on one of the games,,yes u heard rite..MSG...its the best prize i'll ever get! lol

*gettin caught by commise for driving with three ppl on a motor bike..yes i'm a regualr rebel!

*finding internet connection that is faster than my own computer..i'm so ashamed!

* gettin stared at by the young lads in town...theyw anta g reen card i know it..but i'm playing hard to get..cos thats how i rolll in the hood LOL

Anyways i'm off for now, will update asap! hope u guys have a safe time without me! take care
